The Embodied Singer with Jane Murray
Oboist and Licensed Body Mapping Educator

In response to a profound need among musicians for accurate information about the body to reduce pain, avoid injury and to improve or enhance performance, somatic disciplines like Alexander Technique and Body Mapping can provide life-changing guidance towards effortless music-making. For singers in particular, investigating and correcting misconceptions about posture and breathing can lead to greater comfort during long rehearsals, and more joyful singing!

URI faculty member Jane Murray plays oboe and English horn with the RI Philharmonic and Chorus of Westerly Festival Orchestra, where she also serves as orchestra personnel manager.  A licensed Body Mapping Educator since 2008, she is in demand as a clinician, gives individual sessions in her home studio, and has presented classes and workshops at UMass Amherst, SUNY Purchase, Providence College, Boston Woodwind Society, and for the International Double Reed Society 2016 Conference in Columbus, GA. She teaches the course for music majors at Rhode Island College and URI.
