CHORUS OF WESTERLY/GERMANY TOUR

THE CHORUS OF WESTERLY

Concert Tour of Germany, July 2017

Version: September 2, 2016

Day 1 – Thursday, July 6, 2017 – Travel Day – Westerly, Boston, In Flight

Overnight: IN FLIGHT

4:00 PM EDT The Chorus of Westerly Germany Tour singers and followers (henceforth known in combined form as ‘The Chorus Tour Group’) board charter coach buses in Westerly (likely in the parking lots of Westerly High School) for travel to Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. The drive to Boston will likely be about 2.5 hours given that we are traveling during rush hour.

7:00 PM We begin the check-in process with our tour management company ACFEA at Logan, Terminal E, the International Terminal at the Lufthansa check-in stations. For those coming to Logan on their own, please make sure you arrive at Logan at or very near to this time.

9:30 PM We begin boarding our flight to Frankfurt, Germany. The entire tour group will be on the same flight! Our flight is Lufthansa (LH) Flight 421.

10:15 PM Departure from Boston, Massachusetts, USA on LH Flight 421 to Frankfurt, Germany.

Lufthansa typically serves dinner in flight about 1 hour after departure.

Day 2 – Friday, July 7, 2017 – Frankfurt, Travel to Leipzig, Leipzig

Overnight: LEIPZIG

3:30 AM EDT Lufthansa typically serves a light breakfast in flight about this time before landing.

9:30 AM CEST

All times now Central European Summer Time (CEST)

11:10 AM LH Flight 421 from Boston, Massachusetts, USA lands at Frankfurt Flughafen (Airport) am Main, Germany.

11:30 AM The Chorus Tour Group will then head through immigration and customs in Frankfurt. After getting through the border controls and collecting individual luggage, the Chorus Tour Group will meet members of our ACFEA management team (our couriers) and be directed and escorted to the appropriate coach bus.

12:00 PM Once the entire Chorus Tour Group has their luggage and is through immigration and customs, the coach buses will depart from the Frankfurt Flughafen and begin our journey to Leipzig. The drive, subject to changing routes, is about 250 miles (which, if you want a reference, is about the same distance of drive from downtown Westerly, RI, to the Flagpole at Camp Ogontz in Lyman, NH!).

There will be a rest stop/lunch stop about half-way through our drive to Leipzig. Total drive time to Leipzig will depend on traffic conditions and the lunch stop on the way. Arrival in Leipzig will depend on drive time plus how quickly the coach buses can leave Frankfurt (which depends on how quickly the entire group can clear customs and immigration).

4:00 PM Estimated time of arrival in Leipzig at our first hotel: The InterCity Hotel Leipzig (Tröndlinring 2).

7:30 PM The Chorus Tour Group (everyone!) dinner together in the Leipzig Ratskeller (Lotterstraße 1).

11:00 AM For all SINGERS (Required) – Board coach buses in front of the InterCity to head to the city of MAGDEBURG. Magdeburg is the site of the first tour performance in the Johanniskirche. Driving distance is just over 70 miles (or roughly the distance between the downtowns in Westerly, RI and Worcester, MA). FOLLOWERS may come with the SINGERS to Magdeburg at this time or come on a later bus to the city for the performance (or they may remain in Leipzig all day).

12:30 PM For SINGERS and FOLLOWERS who also came with them, lunch is on your own in the small but charming city center in Magdeburg (the Johanniskirche is right in the middle of it). There are many places to eat of all different styles, price levels, and types of service (everything from markets to food stands to sit down restaurants of varying cuisines and price levels).

For those Followers still in Leipzig, lunch is on your own.

2:00 PM SINGERS – Call time for rehearsal at the Johanniskirche in Magdeburg with Andrew Howell, soloists, orchestra. Followers already in Magdeburg may come and listen to rehearsal or explore the city on their own. There will be a short break during rehearsal and rehearsal may end early.

3:15 PM For FOLLOWERS back in Leipzig, we will send a “late bus” from the hotel to Leipzig to Magdeburg about this time if you would like to come to Magdeburg for the concert. This bus should arrive at or near 4:45 pm, subject to traffic conditions. You would then have some time to get a quick dinner on your own in the city before coming to the concert at 7 pm. For followers who decide not to come to Magdeburg for the concert and remain in Leipzig, dinner is on your own.

5:00 PM Rehearsal ends for the singers. Singers may head back out into the city center for a quick dinner on your own. Followers who decide to come on the “late bus” should arrive just before this time at the Johanniskirche.

6:20 PM Call time for Singers back at the Johanniskirche for the performance. We will have tickets for Followers to attend the performance for free. We will distribute them at the door or on your coach bus on the way to Magdeburg. Followers should try to be back at the Johanniskirche by 6:50 pm at the very latest.

Day 4 – Sunday, July 9, 2017 – Leipzig (Chorus sings in morning)

Overnight: LEIPZIG

5:05 AM Sunrise in Leipzig

Morning Breakfast at InterCity Hotel (Breakfast is provided to you free daily, breakfast times will be posted at hotel).

7:30 AM For all SINGERS (Required) – Walk together to the Thomaskirche (Bach’s church) for rehearsal.

8:00 AM SINGERS – Rehearsal at Thomaskirche in choir gallery with organ, brass, and small ensemble.

9:00 AM Rehearsal ends at Thomaskirche, SINGERS go downstairs at church waiting for service.

Briefing on how the service runs and choir’s responsibilities.

9:30 AM Morning Service at the Thomaskirche - The Chorus of Westerly will be the Main Service Choir The Chorus of Westerly will be the “choir” for the morning high service at the Thomaskirche, one of Bach’s most important churches and one of the most important churches in eastern Germany (and in choral music). In fact, Bach himself is buried in the church at the altar. The Chorus will sing at various points throughout the service as part of the mass. The music will be, for the most part, elements of the B MINOR MASS that fit in particular portions of the service. This will equate to about 30 minutes or so of singing throughout the mass. Tour Followers, from any background, faith, affiliation, or creed are welcomed and invited to come and attend the service (if only to come just to listen to the Chorus sing in this incredibly wonderous and important space). We recommend you get there by 9:15 AM. The Thomaskirche’s regular choir is the world famous Thomanerchor (founded in 1212 and once directed by Bach). The choir boys of the Thomanerchor are on break the weekend we are in Leipzig, so we have the

great honor of singing in their place for this high service. The invitation to sing in the church, sing this particular service, and sing Bach is a great honor for the Chorus of Westerly.

LUNCH On your own

2:00 PM For those interested in the Chorus Tour Group, guided walking tours (included for all participants) of Leipzig will be offered around the city center in the afternoon. We will offer these walking tours at varying speeds and you will be able to sign-up for them in advance. The tour guides are local Leipzig residents, and we do recommend you take one if you are interested and able as there is much to see and learn about Leipzig, and these guides are a great resource.

Dinner/Evening The rest of the afternoon and evening is independent and on your own. The couriers and tour guides can help provide recommendations for dinner in Leipzig and/or places to explore on your own. We will also provide, prior to the tour as we compile it, a list of arts and other musical activities happening in the city you might want to attend or visit if interested. Otherwise, after a busy first few days, you have some time to relax and explore.
