Chorus Membership: The Children’s Program

A young Chorus memberLearn, sing, grow, perform, excel, enjoy!  Music Director George Kent founded the Chorus on the premise that young children are capable of, benefit from, and enjoy performing the great masterworks of the choral repertoire. In fact, the Chorus of Westerly is the only one of its kind in the US in which children participate every year as full members of the Chorus. Youth ages 8-18 make up 45% of the 200 singers.

Chorus children receive a comprehensive music education through one-hour rehearsals, twice a week in which they learn a complete choral repertoire in many languages. Maestro Kent sprinkles these sessions with anecdotes about the history of music and lives of the composers. Children join the adults for the last several rehearsals before each concert.

Children may also choose to participate in a weekly Nuts & Bolts class, in which basics of music and singing are taught aside from rehearsal.

Children’s Choir Camp: Every August Chorus children join with Christ Church Choir children for a week of rehearsals at Camp Ogontz in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The camp, directed by George Kent, offers the young singers an opportunity to work on basic choral techniques, to get a head start on the coming year’s repertoire, and to enjoy the mountain and lakeside camp activities.
